Magdeburg Christmas market cancelled after 2024 car-ramming attack

SUMMARY

The Magdeburg Christmas market in Germany has been cancelled due to security concerns after a deadly terror attack last December. Mayor Simone Borris stated that the market won't receive a permit for this year because of insufficient security measures, such as barriers to prevent vehicle access. She emphasized that stronger security should be the responsibility of counter-terrorism police and the regional government.

The cancellation is a setback for the traditional market, which attracts over two million visitors. The trial of Taleb al-Abdulmohsen, the attacker, is currently underway, with prosecutors detailing how he used a car to deliberately target crowds. He faces life in prison if convicted. German law requires markets to have robust barriers to enhance safety.
