France's first lady Brigitte Macron steps up legal battle in gender rumours case

SUMMARY

Brigitte Macron, France’s first lady, is escalating her legal fight against two women accused of spreading false rumors that she was once a man. After a lower court cleared the women, her lawyer announced that they are taking the case to the country's highest appeals court. In December 2021, the women claimed in a YouTube video that she was formerly known as Jean-Michel Trogneux, her brother’s name.

These unfounded claims went viral online, gaining traction even among U.S. conspiracy theorists. The lower court had previously ordered the women to pay €8,000 in damages to Brigitte and €5,000 to her brother.
