Greece suspends asylum applications for migrants from North Africa
SUMMARY
Greece has suspended asylum applications from North Africa for three months due to a surge in migrant arrivals. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis stated that arrivals by boat will face arrest and detention. He emphasized the need for "emergency response measures" to deter human traffickers.
This decision follows a significant increase in migrant landings, with over 9,000 arriving since the start of 2025, a 350% rise from last year. Local authorities are overwhelmed, with many migrants temporarily housed in unsuitable conditions. Greek officials are also collaborating with Libyan authorities to prevent boat departures, despite criticisms from NGOs regarding the treatment of migrants in Libya.
