NOAA and NASA brace for major job cuts

SUMMARY

Layoffs of thousands in the government are expected to affect NOAA and NASA soon. Both agencies, vital for space and extreme weather monitoring, may see cuts up to 10%, potentially eliminating around 1,000 jobs from NOAA's 12,000 employees. This could severely impact the National Weather Service’s operations, although there is speculation about possible exemptions for public safety.

Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency is reviewing these agencies' operations, creating potential conflicts due to Musk's ties with NASA through SpaceX. Layoffs are also happening across energy and environmental agencies, including the Department of Energy, which has already cut numerous positions.
