China and Russia begin joint military drills in Sea of Japan

SUMMARY

China and Russia are conducting joint naval exercises in the Sea of Japan, known as Joint Sea-2025. These drills, which will last for three days, involve joint anti-submarine and air defense operations, among others. Four Chinese vessels, including guided-missile destroyers, are participating alongside Russian ships.

The exercises are part of a broader effort to strengthen their partnership amidst tensions with the United States. Both countries have conducted annual drills since 2012.

The Russian Navy stated, "The exercise is defensive in nature and is not directed against other countries." China has maintained a neutral stance regarding Russia's war in Ukraine while facing pressure from European leaders to influence Moscow.
