US submarine torpedoes Iranian warship in Indian Ocean

SUMMARY

The U.S. Department of War confirmed that a submarine torpedo strike sank the Iranian warship IRIS Dena off Sri Lanka's southern coast. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth stated, “An American submarine sunk an Iranian warship that thought it was safe in international waters.” This is the first U.S. sinking of an enemy ship by a torpedo since World War II.

The Iranian frigate was targeted while in international waters, with at least 80 crew members reported dead and 32 rescued. Sri Lanka’s coastguard responded to a distress call and dispatched vessels for rescue. Iranian sources claim the ship's defense systems were disabled before the attack.

This incident comes after joint U.S.-Israel operations against Iran.
