German wind developer to scrap controversial China turbine order

SUMMARY

Luxcara GmbH, a German offshore wind developer, plans to cancel its order for Chinese turbines from Ming Yang Smart Energy Group. The company aims to replace this with a reservation for 19 turbines from Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy.

Concerns over national security and competition prompted scrutiny from the German government. A defense ministry study suggested China could misuse components for espionage. Recent regulatory changes have imposed tighter controls on critical infrastructure.

Managing director Holger Matthiesen stated the decision was influenced by better offers and synergy with a neighboring project. While the plan to back away from the Chinese turbines has been communicated to authorities, a final contract with Siemens Gamesa is still pending.
