Belarus dissadent says West to keep pressure on Lukashenko to force regime change

Siarhei Tsikhanouski, a recently released dissident, urges the West to maintain pressure on Belarus' leader, Alexander Lukashenko, to encourage democratic change. He believes easing sanctions is not an option, despite Lukashenko's recent pardons of over 300 political prisoners.

Tsikhanouski argues that the release of prisoners is insufficient; further repressive actions must end, and political reforms must be pursued. He states, "The West has a chance to achieve a democratic country" in Belarus.

"I was jailed by him to shut me up. Now he released a strong and armed person – because my word is my weapon ... I plan to use it, so that the regime collapses, Belarus becomes democratic and joins the European family."

He emphasizes the need to tackle internal demoralization and encourages fresh perspectives within the country. Tsikhanouski remains committed to fighting for democracy despite the challenges ahead.
