Immigration accounts for 98% of UK's population growth

SUMMARY

UK's population reached a record 69.3 million in mid-2024, increasing by 755,254 people, primarily due to net migration, which accounted for 97.8% of this growth.

In the year leading up to June 2024, 1,235,254 immigrants arrived while 496,536 emigrated, resulting in a net migration of 738,718. Natural change contributed minimally, with births exceeding deaths by only 16,239. This growth rate is the second-largest in over 75 years.

England experienced a faster population increase (1.2%) than Scotland (0.7%), Wales (0.6%), and Northern Ireland (0.4%). The total number of births was the lowest in 42 years, highlighting demographic shifts in the UK.
