US consumer confidence partially rebounds after trade war tensions ease

SUMMARY

US Consumer Confidence increased by 12.3 points in May to 98.0, up from 85.7 in April. This marks a rebound after five months of decline. The Present Situation Index rose by 4.8 points, while the Expectations Index surged by 17.4 points.

Stephanie Guichard, Senior Economist at The Conference Board, stated, “Consumer confidence improved in May... The rebound was largely driven by consumer expectations.”

Concerns about tariffs persist, yet consumers expressed optimism regarding future income and stock prices. Expectations for a recession over the next year declined, with more people planning to make significant purchases.
