HIV-prevention drug to cost $40 a year from 2027

SUMMARY

Generic versions of the HIV-prevention drug lenacapavir will cost $40 per year starting in 2027, announced Unitaid and the Gates Foundation. They have partnered with Indian pharmaceutical companies to produce affordable generics for low and middle-income countries.

With current costs of approximately $28,000 a year in the U.S., this initiative aims to "scale up HIV prevention". The drug has been proven to reduce HIV transmission risk by over 99.9%. Partnerships will also ensure production in regions beyond India in the future.
