Apple pulls encrypted security feature in UK amid government backdoor demands

SUMMARY

Apple has removed its Advanced Data Protection iCloud feature in the UK due to government demands for backdoor access to encrypted data. UK officials ordered Apple to provide unrestricted access to user data through a "technical capability notice" under the Investigatory Powers Act.

Customers using the feature will need to disable it manually to retain their accounts. Apple expressed disappointment, stating, "We are gravely disappointed that the protections provided by ADP will not be available to our customers in the UK." The demand raised concerns over privacy, as it would allow access to data from users outside the UK. Apple's decision aligns with its stance against creating security backdoors in products.
