Germany to seize small boats under migrant deal with Starmer

SUMMARY

Germany will close a loophole that allows police to seize small boats used by migrant smuggling gangs, as PM Sir Keir Starmer and German leader Friedrich Merz finalize a “friendship treaty.”

This treaty, signed in the UK, pledges to criminalize people smuggling to Britain by year-end. Currently, smuggling into non-EU countries isn’t illegal under German law.A BBC investigation revealed the smuggling operations in Essen. In addition, the agreement plans to enhance cooperation on defense, facilitate travel, and strengthen ties on climate initiatives.

Starmer emphasized that this treaty marks a significant step in the UK-Germany relationship post-Brexit.
