SUMMARY

Germany and Finland are alarmed after an undersea telecommunications cable was severed. The 1,170 km cable, linking Helsinki to Rostock, has raised concerns amid rising tensions with Russia. Foreign ministers from both nations expressed worries about "hybrid warfare by malicious actors."

Previously, incidents involving damaged pipelines in the Baltic Sea fueled fears of sabotage. A natural gas pipeline between Finland and Estonia was heavily damaged in October 2023, reportedly due to a Chinese container ship.

Despite the cable cut, a Finnish cybersecurity expert noted that internet traffic remains unaffected due to alternative routes.
