Secret Service missed 102 radio calls during 2024 Trump shooting

SUMMARY

A government watchdog report revealed that the U.S. Secret Service missed 102 local radio transmissions about a gunman who attempted to assassinate President Trump at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13, 2024. The agency lacked a joint communications room with local law enforcement, which received reports on the suspect, Thomas Crooks. Instead, the Secret Service only received five phone calls and three texts. Crooks opened fire during Trump’s speech, resulting in injuries and a bystander’s death. He had also flown a drone over the area undetected, due to the Secret Service's inoperable counter-drone system. The agency agreed to implement recommendations from the report to improve security.
