California's high-speed rail project is now estimated to cost $231 billion, nearly seven times the original 2008 estimate of $33 billion. The significant increase has raised questions about the project's feasibility and funding. Senator Tony Strickland voiced concerns, stating, “What’s been promised is almost like a three-card monte,” emphasizing the loss of public trust.

Current projections suggest that service from San Francisco to Bakersfield could start around 2033, while full service to Los Angeles may not be available until 2040.
