US could lose more immigrants than it gains for first time in 50 years

More people may leave the U.S. than arrive this year, marking the first such shift in over 50 years, driven by President Trump’s immigration policies. Analysts predict increased deportations and a decline in legal migrations could lead to labor shortages and inflation.

Wendy Edelberg noted, “For the year as a whole, we think it’s likely [immigration] will be negative.” The foreign-born workforce has already shrunk by more than 1 million people since March, impacting sectors like agriculture and hospitality.
