SUMMARY

Bulgaria's parliament recently passed an amendment to its education law that bans LGBTQ+ "propaganda" in schools. Proposed by the Vazrazhdane party, the amendment received 159 votes in favor, with 22 against and 12 abstentions.

The law prohibits the promotion of ideas related to non-traditional sexual orientations and gender identities. Legislators defined "non-traditional sexual orientation" as anything outside the traditional views of attraction between opposite sexes.

Rights groups like the Bulgarian Helsinki Committee condemned the changes, stating they violate basic human rights and contravene EU laws and international standards. This mirrors a similar law passed in Hungary in 2021.
