Europe faces heightened gas supply risk after forecasts showed a record-weak polar vortex and an early sudden stratospheric warming that could send Arctic air into Northwest Europe within weeks, raising odds of a cold winter.

BloombergNEF warned a week averaging 5°C below normal across parts of Europe could add about 1.1 billion cubic meters of gas demand, eroding recent storage gains. The IEA said storage could fall below 10% by March, leaving the continent exposed.

Meteorologist Mark Margavage tweeted: "The Polar Vortex is currently the weakest it’s ever been for the date and is headed for the crucial 0 line."
