SUMMARY

Gonorrhoea cases in England have soared to 85,000, the highest since records began in 1918. Health officials warn that the infection is becoming increasingly resistant to antibiotics, potentially leading to untreatable strains.

Most cases were found in those in their 20s, many of whom contracted the infection while traveling abroad. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) reported 15 ceftriaxone-resistant cases since June 2022, five classified as "extensively drug-resistant".

Dr. Helen Fifer emphasized, “Gonorrhoea is becoming increasingly resistant to antibiotics.” Regular STI testing and condom use are crucial for prevention.
