SUMMARY

Researchers believe they have identified the Spanish galleon San Jose, which sank in 1708 off the coast of Colombia. Commanded by Charles Wager, the Royal Navy attacked the treasure ship carrying gold and silver valued at £16 billion.

A recent study using underwater drones analyzed wreckage found in 2015, confirming it as the San Jose. Silver coins minted in 1707 and Chinese porcelain artifacts suggest the wreck dates to the early 18th century.

“This body of evidence substantiates the identification of the wreck as the San José Galleon,” the researchers stated.
