SUMMARY

Japan has raised the alarm over a potential megaquake along the Nankai Trough following a 7.1-magnitude earthquake off Kyushu.

The Japan Meteorological Agency noted that the probability of a large-scale earthquake is "relatively higher than under normal conditions." This is the first time the agency issued a specific Nankai Trough earthquake advisory.

Experts warn such quakes could cause substantial destruction and potentially result in up to 320,000 deaths. The last major disaster in the region was over 70 years ago, increasing the risk of a significant event. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has urged the public to prepare for potential evacuations.
