Greenland leader calls for independence from Denmark as Trump enters

SUMMARY

Greenland's Prime Minister Múte Egede has expressed a strong desire for independence from Denmark. He emphasized the legal basis for this through the Self-Government Act in his New Year’s speech.

Egede mentioned that a draft constitution for an independent Greenland is ready and that efforts are underway to establish it.

His comments followed President Trump's remarks about purchasing Greenland, which Egede firmly rejected, stating, “Greenland is ours. We are not for sale and will never be for sale.”

He highlighted the opening of a new international airport as a step towards greater autonomy. Egede believes this will enhance tourism and trade.
