Trump and Israel critic Thomas Massie defeated in Kentucky Republican House primary
Ed Gallrein has defeated incumbent Representative Thomas Massie in the Republican primary for Kentucky’s 4th Congressional District, projections show.
The solidly Republican district became a high-profile test of President Donald Trump’s control over his party. Massie, who served seven terms while frequently breaking with Republican leadership, drew the personal ire of Trump during his second term. Notably for his criticism of Israel and Trump's handling of the Epstein files.
Trump and his allies recruited Gallrein — a farmer and former Navy SEAL — to challenge Massie and gave him the president’s formal endorsement. The primary became one of the most expensive in history, with over $30 million spent on advertising.
A senior White House adviser described the effort as a deliberate power play.
“It’s not a retribution campaign, it’s a send a message campaign,” the adviser said. “It’s about reminding people of the political power. It’s not about retribution.”
The adviser continued: “This is basic political management of a party. You have to keep everybody on the reservation. Occasionally you have to shoot a hostage. The next one is Thomas Massie.”
The comments expose the White House’s view of primary challenges as tools to enforce loyalty and demonstrate dominance within the Republican Party. Massie had positioned himself as an independent voice against the establishment for more than a decade.
