US FCC orders a ban on the import of all new foreign-made consumer Internet routers

SUMMARY

The U.S. FCC announced a ban on importing new foreign-made consumer routers due to security concerns, particularly with Chinese-made devices. China holds about 60% of the U.S. router market. The ban does not affect existing models but targets new ones.

The FCC indicated that these routers pose "a severe cybersecurity risk" and have been exploited for malicious activities. Representative John Moolenaar praised the decision, emphasizing the protection against "China's relentless cyberattacks."

The ban excludes routers deemed safe by the Pentagon.

Previously, legal actions have arisen against router manufacturers for deceptive practices related to security.
