Cargo ship struck by possible land-attack cruise missile in the Gulf region
A French-owned cargo ship was struck by a possible land-attack cruise missile in the Gulf region late Tuesday evening local time. The attack injured several members of the ship’s Filipino crew.
U.S. officials confirmed the details to CBS News. The vessel, identified as the CGM San Antonio and owned by a French firm, came under fire while operating in the area. Public ship tracking data showed the ship near Dubai as of midday Tuesday, though its exact position after the strike is unclear.
The U.K. Maritime Trade Operations Centre reported receiving notice that “a cargo vessel has been struck by an unknown projectile.”
This incident marks the latest in a series of maritime events in the Gulf. Since Sunday, UKMTO has documented separate incidents involving three other ships in the region, including a fire aboard one vessel, a projectile strike on another, and a reported attack by small craft on a third.
The strike on the French-owned CGM San Antonio injured several Filipino crew members and adds to the growing pattern of threats facing commercial shipping passing through the Gulf.
