Highest number of conflicts worldwide in 2024 since 1946

In 2024, armed conflicts reached their highest level in nearly 80 years, surpassing 2023's record. A report from the Peace Research Institute of Oslo recorded 61 conflicts across 36 countries. “This is not just a spike – it’s a structural shift,” said report author Siri Aas Rustad.

Africa had the most conflicts, totaling 28, with Asia following at 17. The death toll remained around 129,000, largely due to wars in Ukraine and the Gaza Strip. Rustad warned against U.S. disengagement, stating, “Isolationism in the face of rising global violence would be a profound mistake.”
