Colombia hosts first meeting to quit fossil fuels as energy crisis worsens

SUMMARY

Over 50 countries are meeting in Colombia to discuss phasing out fossil fuels, though the top three carbon-emitting nations, China, the US, and India, are absent. Attendees aim to create trade deals favoring those reducing fossil fuel use and develop national roadmaps for energy transition.

Colombia’s environment minister, Irene Veléz Torres, acknowledged the ongoing energy crisis adds urgency to these discussions. A draft roadmap suggests reducing fossil fuel demand by 90% by 2050 requires significant upfront investment.

International experts will work on effective transition strategies amidst rising climate risks. The conference aims to foster ongoing dialogue and commitments to phase out fossil fuel dependence.
