Karmelo Anthony found guilty of murder for stabbing Austin Metcalf to death

SUMMARY

Karmelo Anthony has been found guilty of murder for stabbing 17-year-old Austin Metcalf to death at a high school track meet in Frisco, Texas. The Collin County jury reached its verdict after days of testimony describing the April 2, 2025, confrontation at Kuykendall Stadium.

Anthony, then 17 and from another school, sat beneath the Memorial High School team tent and was asked to leave about 15 times. Witnesses testified Anthony replied with statements such as "Touch me and you'll find out" and "If you want me to move, you have to move me." He kept one hand in his backpack during the exchange.

The confrontation turned physical when Metcalf approached and touched Anthony in what witnesses described as minor pushing or a shove. Anthony then stabbed Metcalf in the chest. One witness heard Metcalf say "Oh my God" afterward.

Anthony told a police officer right after the stabbing, "I'm not alleged, I did it. He put his hands on me. I told him not to." Prosecutors argued Anthony escalated the verbal dispute by pulling a knife from his backpack and stabbing an unarmed teen.

Student witnesses stated Anthony was the aggressor and the act did not appear to be self-defense. They said no one ganged up on him and recalled Metcalf saying, "I'm not going to fight you at a track meet."

Metcalf was a Memorial High School athlete described by peers as a leader and role model. His twin brother Hunter witnessed the stabbing and was with him in his final moments.

The jury rejected Anthony's self-defense claim. Anthony faces a potential life sentence for the murder conviction.
