Louisiana reports first U.S. death from H5N1 bird flu

A 65-year-old patient in Louisiana, hospitalized with H5N1 bird flu, has died, marking the first U.S. death from this illness.

The patient had underlying health issues and had previously tested positive after contact with birds. The Louisiana Health Department confirmed the death without disclosing the date. They expressed condolences to the family and stated, “This will be the final update about the patient.” Investigators found no further human cases or evidence of human-to-human transmission, although individuals working with birds or livestock are at higher risk. The public health risk remains low.
