SUMMARY
Swedish officials have reported the first detection of a new variant of mpox outside Africa, following a global health emergency declaration due to an outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This version is known as clade 1, associated with more severe illness than the clade 2 variant seen in the 2022 global outbreak. The patient, diagnosed in Stockholm, contracted the virus while in Africa and is receiving treatment.
Public health officials consider the risk to the public low but acknowledge the need for close monitoring. Variants are spreading among marginalized groups, raising concerns about underreporting and stigma.
