SUMMARY

Chinese scientists have developed a new carbide ceramic material that can withstand temperatures up to 6,512°F (3,600°C). This material exceeds the previous thermal limits for hypersonic flight, where most materials fail at lower temperatures.

The unique design includes elements like hafnium, tantalum, and tungsten, providing a protective oxide layer to enhance durability. Professor Chu Yanhui stated, “Our team has – for the first time globally – surpassed this long-standing limit.” The material could be used in aerospace components and energy systems, representing a breakthrough in materials science for hypersonic applications.
