Deutsche Lufthansa to cancel 20,000 short-haul flights to save jet fuel

SUMMARY

Deutsche Lufthansa will cancel some European routes and 20,000 short-haul flights until October to save jet fuel amid rising prices due to the war in Iran. This represents a 1% reduction in passenger capacity.

The majority of the canceled flights are operated by its regional carrier, CityLine, which will also ground 27 operational aircraft. These cuts are expected to save over 40,000 metric tons of jet fuel.

Jet fuel prices have surged since the conflict began, with Europe facing a potential crisis. Chancellor Friedrich Merz plans to meet with the National Security Council to address these shortages.

Additional flight reductions will be announced in late April or early May.
