UK PM Keir Starmer resigns

SUMMARY

Sir Keir Starmer announced his resignation as Prime Minister, visibly emotional outside No 10. He plans to step down by September, stating, “When I leave the biggest job in the country, I shall spend more time on the most important job.”

Starmer reflected on entering Downing Street as his “proudest moment” but acknowledged that his time in office is over. He accepted his parliamentary party's view that he should not lead them into the next general election.

He will stay on until a leadership challenge is complete to ensure a smooth transition. Andy Burnham, a leading candidate for his replacement, is heading to Westminster after winning the Makerfield by-election.
