SUMMARY

Switzerland has enacted the "Federal Law on the Use of Electronic Means for the Fulfillment of Government Tasks" (EMBAG), which mandates that all government-developed software be released as open-source.

This law aims to improve transparency and efficiency, following a decade-long struggle initiated in 2011.

Led by Professor Dr. Matthias Stürmer, the law allows for the release of code unless inhibited by third-party rights.

It also requires making non-personal, non-security-sensitive data available as Open Government Data.

Switzerland's move contrasts with the U.S., where support for open source lags.
