France reports first Ebola case

France reported its first Ebola case linked to the recent outbreak, involving a doctor returning from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The French health ministry indicated that the patient is isolated and contact tracing is underway, with a low risk for the European population.

The DRC's outbreak has seen 1,094 confirmed cases and 277 deaths, the highest number within the first month of any Ebola episode, according to the World Health Organization. Experts have noted that the virus likely circulated for months before the outbreak was declared on May 15.

Contact tracing efforts are at a 55% coverage rate, posing challenges for local authorities. WHO highlights that early cases' presence in urban areas contributes to the outbreak's rapid spread.
