Macron address to nation
SUMMARY
Emmanuel Macron in an address to the Nationsaid the public felt “anger” and “shame” after nationwide protests that led to at least 2,300 arrests. He vowed looters would pay and those who tried to “bring down the Republic” would be held. He said that demonstrators with legitimate grievances were not to be confused with rioters and looters.
Masked groups set fires and attacked public buildings, including Limoges city hall, whose roof collapsed. Authorities said about 550,000 protested; organizers said 800,000.
Paris reported 855 arrests and heavy damage at Place de la République.
Rivals blamed the government. A teen lost an eye, another lost a hand, and police use of riot weapons is under scrutiny.
