AstraZeneca holds talks with Bristol Myers Squibb over $400bn tie-up
AstraZeneca is in negotiations to merge with Bristol Myers Squibb, potentially creating a $400 billion pharmaceutical giant. Discussions have occurred over the past few months, though the outcome remains uncertain.
AstraZeneca, valued at £196 billion, and Bristol Myers Squibb, worth $133 billion, would form the fourth-largest drugmaker globally. This merger could expand AstraZeneca's presence in the U.S. market, raising concerns in the UK about large companies relocating.
While AstraZeneca CEO Sir Pascal Soriot is focused on a revenue target of $80 billion by 2030, he stated that merger activity is not essential for this goal. Both companies may face scrutiny, especially regarding competition laws due to their significant cancer divisions.
BMS stock has risen 21% in 2023, while AstraZeneca's has fallen 8%.
