SUMMARY

Paraguay’s Senate convicted President Santiago Peña of misconduct Friday, removing him over the collapse of Ueno, a digital bank tied to his business interests.

By rejecting his resignation, senators stripped Peña of the lifetime seat and immunity granted to former presidents, exposing him to prosecution. Vice President Pedro Alliana, also under criminal investigation, is set to succeed him.

Ueno grew into the country’s fifth-largest bank on more than $800 million in public deposits, including $355 million from the state pension fund beyond legal limits. Its seizure this week froze the savings of nearly 3 million customers and sparked mass protests.
