'sanctioned'
US sanctions ICC president
SUMMARY
The Trump administration has sanctioned two senior officials of the International Criminal Court (ICC): President Tomoko Akane and trial lawyer Abdoulaye Seye. These sanctions, under Executive Order 14203, target those involved in investigations or prosecutions against countries that do not consent to ICC jurisdiction.
The U.S. claims the ICC has overstepped its authority by pursuing U.S. citizens and those from non-member states. The State Department labeled the ICC as a "corrupt and fatally politicized" court. The administration is launching a diplomatic campaign to challenge ICC authority and expects other nations to withdraw support for it. Additional measures against the ICC may follow.
