DARPA hosts competition to create sprawling AI 'security tools' for critical infrastructure

SUMMARY

The Pentagon is closer to creating AI tools that can identify and fix digital vulnerabilities. The Pentagon's strategy is to reduce human involvement by automating cybersecurity through AI, enhancing control over these essential systems. DARPA's competition at DEF CON 32 uncovered 22 unique vulnerabilities, with 15 automatically patched by "AI-driven solutions;" one team uncovering a new flaw in SQLite. Perri Adams from DARPA noted that "AI can make a fundamental difference" in cybersecurity.

Seven semifinalist teams received $2 million in prize money, and a total of $29.5 million is available for the final competition next year. The challenge aims to address critical vulnerabilities in software and improve overall system security.

Simultaneously, the Biden administration's Office of the National Cyber Director released a report recommending improvements to open-source security for hospitals, energy, and water systems, underscoring the critical need to secure these vital sectors against cyber threats.
