Trump admin pressures Romania to lift restrictions on Andrew Tate

SUMMARY

The Trump administration has urged Romania to relax travel restrictions on Andrew Tate, an influencer facing charges in Bucharest. Tate and his brother Tristan, dual US and UK nationals, were arrested in 2022 on alledged charges including human trafficking and organized crime, which they deny.

US officials initially raised the Tates' case in a recent phone call, and Trump’s special envoy, Richard Grenell, discussed it with Romania's foreign minister at the Munich Security Conference. A request was made for their passports to be returned during court proceedings.

The Romanian foreign minister did not comment on discussions but emphasized the independence of Romanian courts. Grenell claimed their conversation was brief and reiterated his support for the Tate brothers.
