SUMMARY

Vietnam will abolish the death penalty for eight serious crimes, including embezzlement and government sabotage. This decision comes after the National Assembly unanimously approved an amendment to the Criminal Code.

From July 1, the maximum penalty for these offenses will be life imprisonment instead of execution. Current death sentences not yet carried out will be commuted to life.

However, the death penalty will still apply to ten other crimes, such as murder and terrorism. The debate over removing the death penalty for drug trafficking was particularly heated, as lawmakers expressed concerns about rising drug-related issues.
