Liberia agrees to accept up to 1,200 third-country deportees from US

Liberia will accept up to 1,200 third-country deportees from the U.S. this year, with the first group of 20 arriving soon. This arrangement is part of a broader strategy by the Trump administration to deport individuals who cannot return to their home countries.

Many deportees have legal protection against repatriation due to fears of torture or abuse. Washington argues these deals are lawful, but rights groups raise concerns about their transparency.

The Liberian government noted that the deportees may include individuals seeking asylum. Other African nations participating in similar agreements are the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Central African Republic, Ghana, and Sierra Leone.
