SpaceX wins $2.29 billion Space Force contract for data network

SUMMARY

The U.S. Space Force awarded SpaceX a $2.29 billion contract to develop the Space Data Network Backbone, a satellite constellation for secure and high-speed global data transport in military operations.

This low Earth orbit system will provide high-capacity data transport for the Joint Force and must deliver a fully operational prototype by the end of 2027.

The Space Force launched the SDN consortium to collaborate with industrial partners on integration challenges and enhance communication capabilities.

The SDN Backbone will work with the Space Development Agency’s Transport Layer to ensure efficient data backhaul.

Additionally, SpaceX plans to launch an initial public offering on June 12, 2026, potentially raising up to $75 billion.
