Chinese supercomputer leapfrogs best US machines to be ranked world's fastest

SUMMARY

China's LineShine supercomputer has been ranked as the world's fastest in the latest Top500 list, the first time a Chinese computer has held this position since 2017.

LineShine outperformed the US's El Capitan, which now ranks second. Unlike many supercomputers, it operates solely on conventional CPUs, not GPUs, and consumes approximately 42.2 megawatts of power.

The computer can perform over 2 quintillion calculations per second. Other notable supercomputers in the top rankings include those from Germany, Italy, Switzerland, and Japan.

The UK has 11 machines on the list, with the highest ranked being the University of Bristol's Isambard-AI.
