US and Iran agree to halt strikes and meet this week

SUMMARY

The U.S. and Iran have agreed to a ceasefire as they prepare for talks in Qatar regarding the Strait of Hormuz. This ceasefire is already facing challenges due to renewed attacks and President Trump's threats to escalate military action.

Competing interpretations of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) led to tensions. A senior U.S. official stated, "We decided to stop all the kinetic activity."

Both sides plan to allow vessels to move freely while technical discussions continue. Under the MOU, Iran agreed to ensure safe passage for commercial vessels, while the U.S. lifted its blockade of Iranian ports. A "hotline" was also proposed for better military coordination in the strait.

The talks, initially scheduled in Switzerland to focus on Iran’s nuclear program, have shifted to address the Strait of Hormuz instead.
