'spying for China'
Two men found guilty of spying for China
SUMMARY
A retired Hong Kong Police superintendent, Bill Yuen, and UK Border Force officer, Peter Wai, were found guilty of spying for China. They assisted a foreign intelligence service from December 2023 to May 2024 under the National Security Act. The jury could not reach a verdict on another charge of foreign interference, and prosecutors will not seek a retrial. Wai also faced a misconduct charge for accessing Home Office databases improperly.
Prosecutors claimed Yuen led a spying operation from the Hong Kong Economic Trade Office and directed Wai and others in "shadow policing" activities in the UK. They allegedly targeted dissidents and attempted to infiltrate Hong Kong protest movements.
