Adolf Hitler's Eagle's Nest retreat 'completely ablaze'

SUMMARY

A major fire engulfed the Kehlsteinhaus (Eagle's Nest) above Berchtesgaden Friday night. Around 200 emergency personnel fought the blaze through the night. Steep, narrow access and high altitude made firefighting difficult. Police arrested a suspect early and are investigating possible arson.

No injuries have been reported so far; the extent of the damage is still unclear. The building dates from 1937–38 and was an NS-era teahouse. It survived World War II and later became a state-run mountain inn. Authorities plan to release further findings on Saturday.
