India overtakes England as Australia's largest estimated foreign-born resident group

For the first time, India has surpassed England as the largest source of foreign-born residents in Australia. According to the latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, there were an estimated 971,020 Indian-born residents as of June 30, 2025, compared to 970,950 English-born residents.
Since 2015, the Indian-born population has seen significant growth, while the English-born population has declined. As of 2025, Australia had 8.8 million foreign-born residents, making up about 32% of the total population.
The median age for overseas-born residents is 43, down from 46 in 2005, while the Australian-born population has a median age of 35. Overall, Australia's foreign-born population ranks eighth globally.
